Coping Strategies for BPD

It’s a good idea to have coping strategies set up before a crisis occurs. Next is a list of potential coping techniques.

Why do this? So you will be able to calm your emotions down.

  1. Music-a very healthy way to transition your state of being, listening to music alters a person’s state of mind.
  2. Do an activity-walk, learn a new skill, get your blood moving, get your spirit into a positive goal and off any potential negative experience you maybe having, write in a journal, clean your space, set your mind on something else.
  3. Deep breathing-calms the mind and the spirit, promotes good physical health, relieves stress, count your breaths, centers your mind and body at one time, together.
  4. Join a support group (and if you can’t find one, start one!)-there is almost nothing more valuable than having a group of people who know you, that you can relate to.
  5. Practice patience-ride through difficult emotions and times without reacting to them.
  6. Help someone else-when you plan and do something helpful or kind for another person, it helps you, we take focus off of ourselves for awhile, we get an empathetic reaction upon even simply believing we have made a positive difference for another person.
  7. Mindfulness-fully experiencing life, it is becoming utterly aware of your present moment, when you start walking through your life mindfully, you avoid the same pitfalls that got you in your past, this is what real power is.
  8. Pray (if this is your thing)-many people find relief, hope, and encouragement, or strength in prayer.
